A New Class Taught by Poet and Actor DAVID YEZZI

Beginning in February, David Yezzi is teaching a class at the 92nd Street Y on reading poetry—your own and others'—aloud to an audience (very useful for poets and public speakers).


Here's the description: This hands-on performance workshop, combining literary and theatrical practice, looks closely at what makes a poetry reading compelling, clear and resonant. Through textual analysis, vocal technique and group discussion and critique, students will create a pliant and powerful reading style to best serve their work. (Below is Richard Wilbur reading to a crowd at the West Chester University Poetry Conference last year.)

The class runs for eight Tuesdays beginning February 10, 2009 (6:30pm-9:00pm) at the 92nd Street Y (Lexington Avenue and 92nd Street). Cost: $400 for 8 Sessions. No manuscript submission required.

David Yezzi is the Executive Editor of The New Criterion. A former director of the Unterberg Poetry Center at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, Mr. Yezzi has contributed poems and criticism to The New York TimesBook Review, The Times Literary Supplement, The Wall Street Journal, The Paris Review, The New Republic, Poetry, The Yale Review, Poetry Daily, and elsewhere. A Finishing School for Poetry Whores
This workshop, taught by The Madame of The Poetry Brothel, is geared toward the development of a poetry "whore" persona through the writing and workshopping of a small body of poetry for this alter-ego. We will be looking at dramatic monologues and erotic poetry primarily, but also at instances of intimacy in poetry on a more minute level. Classes will culminate in a performance at The Poetry Brothel, where students will read their workshopped poems privately to our patrons.

Theories of Poetic Enunciation
In this workshop we will focus on finding the more resonant qualities of our own voices. We will begin by studying the poetry of great masters to understand how they used their voices to convey particular artistic intentions. Developing a deeper understanding of these poems will help us learn to better articulate our own voices as well as allow them to grow to encompass ever widening circles of emotions and perceptions of the worlds we inhabit. The ultimate goal is to uncover the inherent poetic structure in our own language and better translate it onto, as well as back off of, the page.

Tarot and Poetry
The most fascinating poetry, in any style, opens a door into the unconscious mind, connecting both reader and writer to the perpetual world of myth and dream. Tapping into the primal patterns of the unknown self, poets in this workshop will come to understand ways to incorporate into their work the still, small voice that is so easily hushed and disregarded in daily life. Both as a mode of self-expression and as a way of experiencing the world, poetry transforms and enlightens.

Liberating Forms of Poetry
Structure gives freedom. In this class we will play with traditional forms—sonnet, triolet, villanelle, and sestina—to free our memory and imagination to discover personal material and poetic resources. We will read the classics and contemporary re-workings of these valuable structures, and through them find our own voice and vision. This class will stimulate writers who are already familiar with these forms and welcome those who do not know an iamb from a trochee.

Generating Fiction (Developing Characters & Plot)

What is the story you need to tell? How do you choose characters, decide on a point of view? How do you structure your tale to make it more compelling? In this class, we will answer these questions by exploring sources of inspiration and shaping raw material into more coherent stories or chapters. Writers will be encouraged to develop individual projects and show new pages on a schedule. Weekly exercises will focus on elements of the craft, and substantial class time will be used for constructive critiques of works-in-progress. Experimental approaches and creative nonfiction/ memoir also will be welcome. Writers new to the form or honing their work will find a supportive environment here. (Fiction workshop, though memoir can be presented as well)

Writing Sample Submission Guidelines

• Students who have not yet enrolled in a Level III course must submit a writing sample, or have written permission from the instructor
• Please also include a brief letter of intent, indicating your writing experience, as well as what you wish to get out of a writing workshop.
• Cover letters must state your name, address, day and evening telephone numbers, and e-mail address.
• Students are encouraged to submit samples for more than one class.
• Writing samples may not be returned, so please do not submit your only copy.
• Acceptance into submission-based classes, whether a new or returning student, is up to the discretion of the instructor. Due to the large number of submissions, a critique of a rejected submission is not possible.

WRITING SAMPLE SPECIFICATIONS:

In this workshop we will allow ourselves to extend our roots deeply into the mud of our experience in order to give voice to our poems. This is an opportunity to meet the poems that gestate within us and to engage our greatest resources--attention, courage, precision--in bringing them into being. We will strive for language that is accurate, fresh, and interesting and we will work to create poems whose form, rhythmn, language, and meaning work as an effective whole.

This weekend will be a time to nurture the creative voice inside us and allow it to speak. There will be time for sharing and for response, hearing what our work touches in others, but mainly it will be an inspirational time to write.

The format will include brief talks on aspects of the craft, writing suggestions, time to write and time to share. Some critique is available for those who want that, but is not mandatory.
Both experienced and beginning poets are welcome. Class size is limited to fifteen poets.

We'll meet Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm at the home of Nancy Hechinger on West 12th St. in New York. Address and directions to follow registration. The fee is $300 and checks should be made payable to Ellen Bass and sent to my assistant Shalom Victor at 338 Walnut Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95060. A non-refundable deposit of $50 is required to hold your place. The remainder is due by September 1. If you have paid your entire fee and find that you can't attend the workshop, we'll refund all but the deposit if we're able to fill your space, so please let us know as soon as possible.

She has won numerous awards and has been published in newspapers, magazines and anthologies including Flutter, Long Island Quarterly, The Long Islander, Xanadu, The Lyric, New Verse News, Soul Fountain, North Shore Woman's Newspaper, Long Island Sounds, Voices Israel, Songs of Seasoned Women, and the PPA Literary Review. Her poem "Aftershock" was included in an anthology entitled Echoes from the Heart: an Anthology of Poetry for Peace/from 9.11 to Infinity. Coulaz edited and published the anthology For Loving Precious Beast to help benefit Loving Touch Animal Rescue. Dorothy Friedman August Offers a Writing Workshop Starting July 14th.

Dorothy F. August is an award winning poet, teacher and editor and author of two books of poems Family Album and The Liberty Years. Ms. August studied with John Ashbery and Susan Fromberg Schaeffer at Brooklyn College where she received her M.F.A. She's won prestigious awards, including 1997 N.Y.F.A. Fellowship and has published in Partisan Review, Hanging Loose and The California Quarterly, etc. Currently, she's completing her third book. She has been call a "compassionate and wonderful teacher" by Sapphire. Four(4) Sessions will take place at The Living Theatre on Monday evenings starting July 14th. Course Cost: $115.
