Poetry Workshop in NYC with Ellen Bass

Poetry Workshop
taught by Ellen Bass
October 25 and 26, 2008
N ew York City

photo CD lotuses and Barbara Lierson's lotus photo
Its wonderful root and bud are snow-white, bright.
When was it parted with the western skies?
Nobody knows how deep the mud it grows in is.
When it emerges from the water, we know it is the white lotus.
--Joshu

In this workshop we will allow ourselves to extend our roots deeply into the mud of our experience in order to give voice to our poems. This is an opportunity to meet the poems that gestate within us and to engage our greatest resources--attention, courage, precision--in bringing them into being. We will strive for language that is accurate, fresh, and interesting and we will work to create poems whose form, rhythmn, language, and meaning work as an effective whole.

This weekend will be a time to nurture the creative voice inside us and allow it to speak. There will be time for sharing and for response, hearing what our work touches in others, but mainly it will be an inspirational time to write.

The format will include brief talks on aspects of the craft, writing suggestions, time to write and time to share. Some critique is available for those who want that, but is not mandatory.
Both experienced and beginning poets are welcome. Class size is limited to fifteen poets.

We'll meet Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm at the home of Nancy Hechinger on West 12th St. in New York. Address and directions to follow registration. The fee is $300 and checks should be made payable to Ellen Bass and sent to my assistant Shalom Victor at 338 Walnut Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95060. A non-refundable deposit of $50 is required to hold your place. The remainder is due by September 1. If you have paid your entire fee and find that you can't attend the workshop, we'll refund all but the deposit if we're able to fill your space, so please let us know as soon as possible.

Superabundance is a small collection of new poems & prose poems, in another exquisite handmade foldout booklet from Longhouse. If you’ve never held one of these little gems in your hand, you’re missing out on a unique experience in the world of fine small presses.

Nicolas Born: The Bill for Room 11 is a small collection of my translations of one of the most important poets of post-war Germany. Nicolas Born was born in Duisburg in 1937 and grew up on the lower Rhine before moving to Berlin in 1963. He was befriended with Günter Grass, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Peter Handke and many other important poets and writers. In addition to four collections of poetry, Born also wrote three novels, including Die Falschung, which was filmed by Volker Schlöndorff and starred Bruno Ganz and Hanna Schygulla. Born died of cancer in 1979. His collected poems and a selection of his letters were published by Wallstein in 2007.

The first book, Not Quite What I Was Planning, is out now.

About The Book

Not Quite What I Was Planning by Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser (HarperCollins, 2008)

Not Quite What I was Planning: Six Word Memoirs from Writers Famous and Obscure collects almost 1,000 six-word memoirs, including additions from many celebrities including Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, Dave Eggers, Richard Ford, Deepak Chopra, Moby, and more. A New York Times bestseller and subject of hundreds of stories from The New Yorker to NPR and hailed as "American haiku," SMITH's book of six-word memoirs is both a moving peek at the minutia of humanity and the most inspirational toilet reading you'll ever find.

Six-Word Memoirs: The Legend
Legend has it that Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response? “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

Last year, SMITH Magazine re-ignited the recountre by asking our readers for their own six-word memoirs. They sent in short life stories in droves, from the bittersweet (“Cursed with cancer, blessed with friends”) and poignant (“I still make coffee for two”) to the inspirational (“Business school? Bah! Pop music? Hurrah”) and hilarious (“I like big butts, can’t lie”).

To submit* your story go to: http://www.smithmag.net/sixwords/

BORDERS 2nd Open-Door Poetry Contest Through July 2008

BORDERS 2nd Open-Door Poetry Contest
Judged by BILLY COLLINS, former U.S. Poet Laureate

The second Borders Open-Door Poetry Contest is open for submissions! Former U.S. Poet Laureate, and renowned poet Billy Collins will judge the contest and welcomes your poem submissions. The top 10 (5 adult, 5 student) poems submitted, in text or in video, will be published on our site right alongside a poem by Billy Collins in an upcoming episode! Billy will also read and give feedback on the poems he selects as best. All finalists’ poems will be considered for publication in our annual “Best of” book, which will highlight the many talented poets in the Borders community!

Contest Updates and Details:

Poetry contest submissions for our 2nd contest being judged by Billy Collins are open through July, 2008.

Two winners will be chosen! A student/teen (age 13-18) winner as well as an adult winner (age 19+).

The top 5 poems from teens (age 13-18) and the top 5 poems from adults (age 19+) submitted to the Borders Open-Door Poetry contest will be published on our site alongside a poem by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins.

The contest is open in both subject and genre, and is completely free of charge.

Each entry must be original and otherwise unpublished in any format (print or online publication).

Submissions from the first contest will carry over and be considered for this 2nd contest, so you needn’t resubmit the same poem.

You can submit as many original poems as you’d like, but please submit each one separately by clicking the button below. A pop-up form will appear for your entry.

Poems in text should be a maximum of 500 words. Poems submitted as video readings should be submitted in any common format not exceeding 12MB. Please submit your poem’s text along with your video reading, within the same entry form.

All entries will be considered by the Student Publishing Program’s Advisory Board—a panel of top authors, editors and educators from the world of poetry—and then our celebrity judge will read the contest finalists and choose the winner.

You must be over 13 years of age to participate.

After several enchanting years together, Jean-Loup tells her that he must return to France. She is in a quandary—stay on the isle of Manhattan where she has work, friends and speaks the lingo or depart for Paris with the utterly adorable frog prince? There is one teensy-weensy problem—Jean-Loup hasn't asked her to go with him. When he finally pops the question, it certainly isn't the one she expects.

The first annual Hobart Book Expo will be held this year in the Hobart Book Village. Of the approximately 35 Book Towns worldwide, Hobart is one of few in the USA, and the only one east of the Mississippi, and is located in the historic Western Catskills. Join us for a weekend of getting to know authors and publishers.

Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to be an author yourself? Come talk to the experts, from authors that have just published their first book, to ones that have learned how to make a living at writing books.

A series of lectures and a panel discussion will be held during the two days.

Maybe you just want to start collecting books that are signed by authors? What better place to start than to talk to the author personally?

Or you would like to have that dusty old tome you found in your attic appraised? Free appraisals will be one feature of the weekend.

While spending the weekend with us, explore the Book Village Trail, that adds three more book stores to the ones that we already have in the Village - Bibliobarn in South Kortright, Steinway Books and the Delaware County Historical Association in Delhi.

To participate in the event, as an author or small press, please e-mail hobartbookvillage@gmail.com or call 607.538.9222.

George Wallace, first Poet laureate of Suffolk Count, is the author of sixteen chapbooks published in the US, UK, and Italy.Winner of the CW Post Poetry Prize, Wallace is the editor of poetrybay. com and poetryvlog. com. An author whose work has been translated into French, Spanish, Italian, German, Korean, Bengali, Russian, and Macedonian, he has traveled extensively to perform his work and to teach poetry workshops. The Battered Suitcase July 2008 Now Live

The July 2008 issue of The Battered Suitcase is now live at

http://www.vagabondagepress.com

We are currently accepting submissions for September and particularly interested in flash fiction, short stories and narrative non-fiction humor.

Visit our Submissions page for more details:
http://www.vagabondagepress.com/submissions.html

In our second issue, performer and poet Lucie Barât serves up a breakfast of Eggs and Angst in "Joe, Ham and Eggs." Author William de Rham unexpectedly stumbles into a life of purpose in the back alleys of Barcelona. E.S. Parkinson paints a stark portrait of birth and death in "The Red Shoe" while Eric McKinley reminds us that in love, like comedy, timing is everything. Award-winning author Melanie Haney portrays a grief-stricken mother and her ritual for redemption in "Milk".

Michael Mirolla's Triptych silver-plates the clouds of madness and Malachey's humorous "Perceptive Norm" offers a new perspective on the old tag line "A world turned upside down". Stephanie Davies reminisces on adolescent regrets and Sarah MacManus draws a fine line between lust and passion in a tale of art and angst in the Midwest. Lynne Hinkey's "The Art of Funeral" explores the human rituals of partings.

Lyrical contributors this month are Adam Franklin-Williams and Moist Bamboo of Welsh acoustical pop group Toy Horses whose refrains run the emotional scale of heart-breaking pathos to whimsical mirth.

Poetry selections for July include Colette Jonopulos, editor of Tiger's Eye poetry journal, novelist David LaBounty, philosopher Duane Locke, Colin James, Joseph Goosey, Kat Lillian Steiger, Richard Fein and the Senryu-like gems from poet and composer Suchoon mo.

Art contributions include the glowing, light-infused abstracts of Samantha Keely Smith, the surreal dreamscapes of Russian painter Dmitry Fesechko, the landscapes of Doug Sundling and the delicate hand-tinted photojournalism of Randy Getty.

The Battered Suitcase is devoted to fiction and non-fiction that examines life in all its ambiguity, grittiness, glory and despair and is dedicated to promoting work that explores the complexity of the human experience.

Maverick Duck Press Seeks Book Reviews & Manuscripts

News:
Attention all chapbook reviewers and poetry bloggers: contact us here at Maverick Duck Press if you're interested in reviewing any of our titles! We'll gladly send you a complimentary copy to review on your website, blog or in your print publication. Also, don't forget to check out our catalogue and the fine poets we've recently published. You may find a new favorite poet there.

Coming Soon From Maverick Duck Press:
Donora Hillard - Romance (June 2008)
Susan Maurer - Maerchen (July 2008)

About Maverick Duck Press:
Maverick Duck Press was founded in 2005 to help give a voice to undiscovered talent in poetry. We are a small chapbook press that publishes limited run, saddle stapled chapbooks. We look for fresh and cutting edge talent with an eye for detail and a powerful voice. Our books are available through this website and via readings from the authors. We do not have the ability to mass distribute like the big publishers, but we'd like to think that we are doing this for art's sake.

Submission Guidelines
All chapbook manuscripts should be in Word format and contain at least 20 poems within them. Poets should submit their best work, as the chapbook is a body of work that reflects the poet's style and personality. No simultaneous submissions. No previously published manuscripts/books, however, a manuscript may contain poems within it that have been published in print or online journals. Keep in mind that we are looking for fresh, interesting undiscovered poets. Due to the large amount of submissions we receive, a response in regards to your manuscript could take up to three months.

No Fee Monostich Writing Contest Deadline July 8th

Gotham Writers' Workshop holds a free (no entry fee, no reading fee) contest and a chance to win a free class:

GWW's Monostich Writing Contest
Entry deadline is July 8, 2008.

Poets rejoice! Here's your chance to win a free 10-week writing workshop. Enter our Monostich Writing Contest. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, Wikipedia provides the following definition: A monostich is a poem which consists of a single line. The following is an example:

'Skunks,' the squirrel said, 'are sent to try us.'
- Ralph Hodgson

A monostich could be also titled; due to the brevity of the form, the title is invariably as important a part of the poem as the verse itself:

COWARD

Bravery runs in my family.

- A. R. Ammons

You can learn more about the history and characteristics of the monostich in an online article by William J. Higginson titled "From One-line Poems to One-line Haiku."

Now we invite you to write your own monostich and enter it in our One-line Poem Writing Contest. Enter the competition here. (http://www.writingclasses.com/ContestPages/poem.php)

Ecopoetry Anthology Calls for Poetry by Dec 15th

CALL FOR POETRY SUBMISSIONS: EARTH'S BODY: AN INTERNATIONAL ECOPOETRY ANTHOLOGY

Deadline: December 15, 2008

Coeditors Ann Fisher-Wirth and Laura-Gray Street are looking for a wide and varied array of submissions. Our working definition of "ecopoetry" is flexible; it includes not only what might be called nature poetry, and not only poetry that focuses on environmental issues, but also experimental poetry--poetry that explores language in its relations with the other-than-human. We welcome work by emerging as well as established poets. We welcome serious poems, playful poems, poems in open or traditional forms. Depending on limitations of space, we will consider not only short poems but also poems of several pages. The anthology will include only living poets or poets who were alive as of July 2007, and will include only poems either written in English or already translated into English; for poems not written in English, both the original and the translation must be submitted, and if accepted, both will be published. We will consider work that has been previously published, but the poet (and/or translator) MUST control rights to the work.

Please send up to six poems to BOTH Ann Fisher-Wirth and Laura-Gray Street. You may send them as email text or by snail mail. If they come as email text, make sure the spacing and lineation travel accurately. WE WILL NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS AT THIS TIME. Please also include a short bio and a cover letter, and an SASE for our reply.

Ellen Bass Leads Workshop at Esalen

WRITING ABOUT OUR LIVES
Lead by Ellen Bass
September 5-7, 2008
Esalen, Big Sur

Dear Writers,

If you have been to Esalen, you know it is one of the most beautiful--and inspirational--places on the planet. If not, perhaps it's time to visit. This workshop will be an opportunity to delve deeply into your writing without distractions or interruptions. If you find that you're not getting enough time for writing in your daily life, if you have pieces you can't seem to get started on, or if you just want to keep on keeping on, this is a spectacularly beautiful and nourishing place to do it.

There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium, and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. --Martha Graham

This workshop will help keep the channels open. There will be time for writing and time for sharing and feedback. From beginners to experienced, all writers are welcome. Whether you are interested in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, or journal writing, this is an an opportunity to explore your truth and expand your craft.

Esalen fees cover tuition, food and lodging and vary according to accommodations--ranging from $320 to $605. The sleeping bag space is an incredible bargain. Some work-scholarship assistance is available, as well as small prepayment discounts and senior discounts. All arrangements and registration must be made directly with Esalen, but if you have questions about the content of the workshop, feel free to email me or call me at 831-426-8006.

Please register directly with Esalen at 831-667-3005 or at www.esalen.org
